Back in 2010, Uber wasn’t a global giant. It was still called UberCab, and investors dismissed it as too small of a market.
Garrett Camp, one of the co-founders, put in the first $250,000 of his own money to get things moving. Soon after, Uber closed its seed round with $1.25M from First Round Capital and angel investors like Chris Sacca.
That belief, when most said no, became the spark for one of the fastest-scaling startups ever. Sometimes the first check comes from founders betting on themselves.

Steve Jobs once noted an irony in marketing: Japanese companies almost never advertise “quality,” yet they’re seen worldwide as leaders in it. On the other hand, American companies talk about quality all the time in ads but don’t enjoy the same reputation.
The difference comes down to experience. Customers don’t base their opinion on slogans, awards, or glossy campaigns, they form it by using the product. If the experience consistently matches or exceeds expectations, quality becomes the brand. If it doesn’t, no amount of marketing can fix it.

Most founders think they need to be at every event, every meeting, and every coffee chat. But the truth is, those things rarely build real companies.
What actually matters is building a product people love. If that exists, funding and connections will show up on their own. Time spent shaking hands or collecting business cards is often just leisure disguised as work.
The focus should be on solving problems, creating value, and delivering something that people care about. Once that foundation is solid, the right network and support will naturally follow.
