Mark Zuckerberg was just 22 when he turned down a $1 billion acquisition offer from Yahoo in 2006.
At the time, Facebook was still a private company with around 10 million users, mostly college students. Many of Facebook’s investors and board members were in favor of the deal—it would have meant a massive payday, including nearly $200 million for Zuckerberg personally.
But Mark refused. He believed Facebook had much more potential and famously said, “I don’t know what I would do with the money. I’d probably just start another social networking site. I kind of like the one I already have.”
Some board members explored the idea of replacing him as CEO to take the deal, but Zuckerberg controlled enough of the voting shares to block any attempt to remove him.
That decision shaped the future of Facebook—and tech history.
